Welcome to the Pick of the Week Contest!
This contest started a few years ago over on the Mr. Market is HUGE!!! stock forum. I did not start the contest, but I somehow became the scorekeeper. I found it to be great fun.
I moved the contest to this board where I can more closely control the language, etc. that is posted. Not that Mr. Market's board is overrun with foul language or anything—actually it's pretty good in terms of staying mostly clean that way. But I got into a few arguements with a few people over there, and I don't want that to happen again. I have a great deal of respect for Ernie, who started that board, and for Karel, who manages it for him, and my moving this contest here is not meant to draw people away from that fine stock message board.
This contest is the only reason I started this board, but feel free to carry on stock-related threads if you like. Just please try to keep messages separated into their proper threads, so that some semblance of organization is maintained.
Thanks, and have fun!

| | Pick of the Week Contest RULES « Reply #1 on Dec 28, 2007, 4:49pm » | |
1. To participate in the contest, enter your stock pick or enter a ca$h position (see rule #2 below), between the close of trading on the last day of the trading week and no later than 3:59 p.m. Eastern on the first day of the next trading week. All picks must be from the NYSE, the AMEX, or the NASDAQ.
2. If you wish to start in cash, meaning $$$ and not Meta Financial Group, whose symbol is CASH, you must so indicate by use of the dollar sign ($). Examples: $, $$$, Ca$h, etc. The idea is to eliminate any ambiguity. Failure to include the dollar sign in opening a "cash" position will result in your opening a position in Meta Financial Group.
3. You may change a previously posted pick any time before the market opens on the first day of the trading week.
4. THE FOLLOWING ARE NOT ALLOWED:
(a) Over the counter, bulletin board & pink sheet stocks (b) Short positions (c) Stocks priced less than $5.00 at time of post (d) Limit orders (Added 1/6/08) A player who enters one of these invalid picks during trading hours will not receive any penalty other than the fact that it will count as one of the player's two weekly positions. If the invalid pick is the player's first pick of the week and if the player does not correct the invalid pick by the end of trading on the last day of the trading week, he or she will be assessed a 3% penalty for the week. If the invalid pick is the player's second pick of the week, the player is finished for the week, and his or her weekly total is the first pick's gain or loss at that point. 5. If you enter a pick before the market opens, you will get the opening price. If you enter a pick during the trading day, your opening price will be determined by the time stamp on your post. Your price will be the opening price of the first minute after your post is made. IMPORTANT: do not edit your post in which you make your stock pick if that post is made during trading! If you do, you will be banned from the contest!
6. You may close your play any time you like and enter a second pick, or you may simply stay in cash until you are ready to take your second position. You may decide to stay in cash the entire week and not play a stock long or short; that's fine too, but you will be penalized 1%. (A cash position does not count as one of your two positions for the week.)
7. Staying in a cash position the entire week will result in a 1% penalty.
8. Although this is a weekly contest, your running total will be tracked to see who gains the most by the end of the year.
9. Failure to enter a stock pick or a cash position prior to 4:00 p.m. Eastern on the first day of the trading week will result in a 3% penalty for the week.
10. All picks must be entered after the market closes on the last day of the trading week (usually Friday) and prior to the market close on the first day of the next trading week (usually Monday—see rule #1 above). If a player anticipates being unable to post during that 72-hour window, he or she may make this known and make a pick for the following week(s) prior to the close of the current week's trading. However, in doing so the player understands and agrees that this pick is "carved in stone," and under no circumstances whatsoever may it be changed. Important: this allowance is intended as a matter of necessity, and not as a matter of convenience! Please do not abuse this allowance. If you're too disinterested to post your pick during the 72-hour window, then please come back when your interest level rises to the challenge.
13. Only one player may play a given stock position at one time.
14. (Added 12/30/07) Everyone starts with an imaginary $10,000, and for each pick the whole amount is invested. At the end of the year, the person with the most virtual dollars is crowned the best weekly stock-picker of the year! Players who enter the contest weeks or months after the first week will receive $10,000 -0.5% compounded weekly. For example, if a player first enters the contest on May 12 (week 20), they will start with $9,091.56, which is 10,000*(1-.005)^19.

Hi Rob. Best of luck on this new thread! I see you have made some changes in the POTW rules, namely no short positions and the 1% penalty for remaining in CA$H. I'm a little surprised that you will not allow shorting stocks. Have I misunderstood, or could you please illuminate a little more? Thanks for keeping this great contest running. Riverbabe (And have a very happy and prosperous 2008!)

No, Riverbabe. You got it exactly right. No shorting allowed for this go-round. The reason is that there was always the problem of having to go and prove that these securities were actually shortable. Sometimes, no problem; sometimes, a royal pain.
And by the way, welcome to Rob's (experimental) Stock Board! I see a certain stately knight on the members list as well. Welcome, Sirtuck! I look forward to some good stock-picking from the both o' yous.

Welcome to the POTW 2008, Mr. Goober Peas! Thanks for kicking things off!
A note to everyone: I just added a new rule to the rules post. I also reformatted it a bit so that it should be a little easier to read.

| Welcome to you, Ray! I hope you keep good, sharp points on those darts this year! And plenty of cold beer on hand!
I haven't had a lot of free time this weekend, and what time I have had has been spent redesigning and revamping the spreadsheet to reflect the new format. I wanted to do some research to try to come up with a better weekly pick than my standard, tried and true IMCL, but I just haven't had the time. So I guess I'll start off with IMCL, to no one's surprise I'm sure.

What a crummy start to the 2008 contest (unless you're Peter or Peanuts!)
Well, I'll just look at it as a crummy end to 2007, and Wednesday will be better.
